Automobile Insurance

Overview
In Alberta, basic automobile insurance (accident benefits and third party liability) is required by law. Additional insurance coverage (such as collision and comprehensive) is not required by law.

In order to ensure basic coverage is affordable and accessible, Alberta has established a maximum amount that can be charged for basic coverage. While there is no maximum amount set for additional coverage because it is not mandated by law, the Automobile Insurance Rate Board (AIRB) regulates automobile insurance rates in Alberta. The AIRB approves all rating programs for insurers selling basic and additional coverage to Albertans. The AIRB has statutory authority to approve, reject or require changes to Alberta automobile insurance companies’ premium rating program filings. For more information, please see the Automobile Insurance Rate Board website.

Automobile Insurance Rating Factors Framework
The Automobile Insurance Rating Factors Framework is used by the Superintendent of Insurance to inform decisions on what automobile insurance rating factors to allow for use in Alberta. It is also intended to promote openness and transparency about the decision making process for both insurers and Albertans.

About endorsements
Endorsements (also referred to as riders) amend an existing insurance contract by adding, deleting, excluding or otherwise altering the scope of the original policy. In Alberta, automobile policy endorsement forms are separated into 2 categories:

  1. Standard Endorsement Forms (SEF) that have been approved for use by the Superintendent of Insurance; and
  2. Conditionally Approved Endorsements (CAE) that are non-standard endorsement forms approved by the Superintendent of Insurance for use by a particular insurance company wishing to address specific needs of its clients.

Pursuant to section 551 of the Insurance Act: “No insurer may use a form of application, policy, endorsement, or renewal or continuation certificate in respect to automobile insurance other than a form approved by the Superintendent of Insurance”.

About Conditionally Approved Endorsements (CAEs)
The following endorsement list does not include CAEs for which individual insurers have received approval to use. Bulletin (PDF, 76 KB) describes the information required from an insurer in order for the Superintendent of Insurance to consider approving a CAE. Copies of CAEs are available from insurers directly. If you wish to confirm whether a non-standard CAE has been approved for use by the Superintendent of Insurance, please contact us.
